Pallet Restacking

When drivers arrive at their destination and open the door of their 53-foot trailers, the last thing they expect to see is tipped-over pallets and product that is shifted off the pallets, either forward or to the side. These pallets shifted during transport and are unsafe to handle with a forklift. This is a major issue and delay at most distribution centers because the only option is to manually handle and restack all pallets in the truck to prepare them for re-delivery and forklift handling. Pallet restacking is an intense, physical effort and requires experience and available warehouse manhours.

This is not a common occurrence; many truck drivers will only experience a shifted load once or twice in their 20+ year careers. But for semi-truck drivers that drive across the country, there are a lot of factors out of their control that causes this problem. Often the shipper of the goods contributes to the problem by either

  1. Not properly loading and spacing the pallets in the truckload
  2. Not using enough stretch wrap to stabilize and secure the goods to the pallet
  3. Limited dunnage or dunnage not rated to support the weight of the load

At times, the shipper is not the only one contributing to the issue with the load. A lot can happen on the road, such as high vibration, frequent stops, windy roads, and emergency braking situations. When these situations happen, poorly loaded truckloads may tip or shift. To keep the load stable the entire trip, it’s critical each pallet is stacked uniformly and well-wrapped when the product is heavy and doesn’t stack well. Although strategically adding dunnage is helpful, it is not a substitute for doing a good job preparing and wrapping each pallet.

When shortcuts are taken, this can happen to your truckload.

Distribution Centers Use Pallet Restacking Partners to Reduce Failed Deliveries

When a shifted truckload of product arrives at the destination, the Receiver really only has two options. (1) They can refuse the delivery, which leaves the shifted truckload for the truck driver and freight broker to handle; as far as they are concerned the Purchase Order never arrived. Or (2) the receiver can select to manually restack and handle the load themselves; this makes them fully responsible for unloading the truck without a forklift, including the time needed and handling the safety concerns of shifted pallets. Most large distribution centers refuse shifted deliveries because they do not have the labor available to fix loads on demand. Unfortunately, you can see why the Receiver would not signup to deal with this problem.

Once the receiver refuses the delivery, the truckload is in distress and must find a place to fix the load or deal with a completely lost load that must go back to the shipper. It works out in everyone’s favor when the truckload of goods delivers, as expected. You simply need to find a restacking partner nearby to help fix the load.

Distribution Centers Don’t Have the Time, but Transload Now Does!

At Transload Now, our warehouses specialize in rescuing distressed truckloads and helping them deliver goods where they need to go. We work with several regional distribution centers around the country and help re-work their shifted truckloads that arrive.

When a shifted truckload arrives at one of these distribution centers, they refuse the load and give the drivers instructions to fix the load and provide the driver with our contact information to have the truckload fixed for a re-delivery appointment. This saves the drivers and brokers a lot of time by not having to search for services.

One of our customers is a national bargain retail chain store in the United States with a distribution center in Tampa, FL that often has shifted loads arrive at their facility. The shifted truckloads are often of the same few products that sell fast but don’t travel well. The product is heavy and the packaging is not great, so it is the perfect recipe for disaster while the product travels 20 hours down the East Coast in the back of a truck.

Partners that Solve the Problem

Since this is a frequent issue for some of this distribution center’s Vendors, they prefer the drivers find a local restacking warehouse for their truckload so they can make their delivery. This helps keep the product in stock and moving to the retail stores.

The distribution center prefers not to restack the loads and does not want to handle that liability. They prefer a reliable third-party warehouse to do the job, so they partnered with one of our Tampa facilities to handle any dry vans that shift.

When the Tampa distribution center receives any shifted dry vans of goods, they immediately give the driver our information and have them call to setup a restack appointment. Our team has historically outperformed local competitors when it comes to restacking work. This gives the customer greater confidence that the pallets we restack will reach their final destination without requiring additional handling.

Our local Tampa warehouse team even keeps custom packing materials around just to stabilize these volatile loads with heavy-duty edge protectors and 4,000+ lb stretch wrap.

We are experts in restacking their dry goods and they trust us to get the truck back for re-delivery, usually that night.
