Cross Docking Freight

As freight moves through the supply chain, there are often unexpected slow-downs that require additional storage and handling of the product. In these situations, the product ends up at a freight cross-docking warehouse. Another common reason to cross-dock freight is that the goods must change modes of transportation before they reach the end destination, such as when a product enters the country in loose-loaded 40-foot containers and must be delivered to customers palletized on a 53-foot truckload. Cross-docking freight at a flexible, premium warehouse is a reliable solution to keep your supply chain flowing smoothly.

Our cross-docking warehouses offer flexible delivery appointments, skilled staff, short-term storage, and other valuable services to help prepare goods for their final destination.

Achieving Results in your Supply Chain

By Cross Docking Freight To Solve Problems

When a delivery appointment at the receiving destination does not go as expected, the entire supply chain team is put in a tight spot and does not have many options to consider. The goods must get to their final destination.

Unfortunately, issues at delivery appointments are a very common cause for distressed truckloads to require cross-docking near the final destination. When the Receiver refuses to accept a truckload that has driven across the country, there is usually a problem with the load or the driver missed their appointment for various reasons. With so many layers of communication in logistics, it is easy for delivery appointment times to get lost or mixed up along the way.

At some very strict distribution centers, they have low or no tolerance for missed delivery appointments or handling freight that has shifted. In these cases, the freight broker and shipper usually have two options.

  1. They can find a local warehouse to cross dock the freight until they can schedule a new delivery appointment at the Receiver’s facility in 1-5 days.
  2. The Shipper can decide to cancel the load and send the goods back to the Origin.

At Transload Now, we see a lot of large distribution centers and big-box stores that are strict with their delivery appointments and the specifications of the palletized product that they receive. When specifications and timelines are not met, trucks are refused and the clock starts running for the driver and broker to figure out a solution. This is when freight brokers call us to help store and redeliver their goods.

Mini Case Study – Store Aluminum Until Redelivery Is Scheduled At the Manufacturer

Tim is an example of one of our customers that needed a cross-dock warehouse to help with missed delivery appointments. Tim is a customer we work with in Tampa, Florida to cross-dock their palletized bundles of raw aluminum bars. The raw aluminum is used by a nearby manufacturer with strict delivery appointments and minimal warehouse space.

On the other end, the provider/shipper of the aluminum is in Michigan and likes to ship products as fast as they can make it. Who needs an appointment?

You can see how both the receiver’s and shipper’s methods do not always lead to a smooth delivery in Florida.

Now, when the shipper wants to send the product before the receiver is ready, the product is sent to our cross-docking warehousing in Tampa, FL for short-term storage until a delivery appointment can be scheduled with the Receiver.

This solution saves everyone a lot of headaches, ensures the supply chain runs smoothly without drivers sitting on loads, and gets the product to the customer when and how they need it.
